Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in Him, for He shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between His shoulders. Deuteronomy 33:12 (NLT)
We lived in Paris for about 11 months the first time that our oldest daughter and her husband came to visit. One of the highlights of their visit for me was having time with my newest grandbaby, Kate. We had fun and did all the things Paris offers to tourists.
On their second visit, they brought Kate again, but now she was a year older, and had developed quite a personality. Kate was a lot of fun. But when she got tired, no matter where she was, her little eyes closed and her whole body relaxed. Whether at the iconic Eiffel Tower or the well-groomed Luxembourg Gardens, Kate slept peacefully in her backpack carrier. Snuggled near her daddy’s shoulders, in his presence, Kate let go of all the cares of the world and drifted happily to sleep. She wasn’t worried about directions to the next tourist site, if pickpockets were nearby, or about staying safe in traffic, Kate was securely at rest. Her daddy had her, and he was watching to be sure she remained safe. And with all that security came a delightful and beneficial slumber.
In Deuteronomy 33, we find Moses blessing each of the tribes of Israel. Moses had led these people for 40 years and would no longer be their leader. He was about to die, and Joshua was about to take over leadership. Here in verse 12, we see the tribe of Benjamin being blessed. Moses called the tribe of Benjamin, beloved of the Lord. Here is a cool fact, the promised land given to Benjamin’s tribe housed the city of Jerusalem. This indeed was special!
Both Saul, the first King of Israel, and Saul, the terrorist turned, Paul the Apostle, came from Benjamin’s tribe. But here in this blessing, Moses is telling this tribe a great truth; there would be a blessing simply because the people of the tribe of Benjamin would live near the temple of their God. As Matthew Henry put it, “it is a happy thing to be in the neighborhood of the temple.” Why? Because God’s presence was there!
And if you know Jesus personally, then you are his temple-his presence is in you- what a happy state of affairs! And with his presence comes security and beneficial rest. No matter what troubles are finding their way into your world today, as his beloved, you can rest securely in his love.
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1
